BJP legislators in Manipur gathered on Thursday with state party President A. Sharda Devi, amidst ongoing deliberations on appointing the next Chief Minister. State Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh emphasized the urgency of the decision following the resignation of the former Chief Minister, stating that all party MLAs participated in the meeting.
The political scenario in Manipur was further destabilized after N Biren Singh resigned on February 9, following a period of sustained violence and unrest. This situation culminated in the imposition of President's rule on February 13, following a report from the state governor.
Under Article 356 of the Constitution, the President's rule effectively places Manipur's administrative operations under the control of the President through the Governor, with legislative powers transferred to the Parliament, suspending the state's legislative authority.
In efforts to quell the ongoing violence, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has urged residents to surrender any illegally held weapons to local authorities within a week. He issued a request calling on all communities, especially the youth, to participate in this initiative as a step towards restoring peace in the region.
The request outlines a seven-day deadline for compliance, with Bhalla expressing that returning these looted arms can significantly contribute to achieving stability and peace in Manipur. (ANI)
