Amrita Hospital in Faridabad has achieved a medical breakthrough by successfully conducting a rare third kidney transplant on 47-year-old Devendra Barlewar, a DRDO scientist.
The procedure, which lasted four hours, was completed on January 8, 2025, and marks a significant advancement in organ transplantation in India. The operation was made possible by the donation of kidneys from a 50-year-old brain-dead farmer.
Dr. Ahmed Kamaal, Senior Consultant in Urology, highlighted the immunological challenges presented by four existing kidneys, which required specialized protocols and optimized immunosuppression to protect the new kidney from rejection. Dr. Anil Sharma noted the surgical challenges of accommodating a fifth kidney due to limited space and prior surgeries.
Barlewar expressed gratitude for the life-changing procedure, citing improved health and independence after being dependent on dialysis. Dr. Kunal Gandhi emphasized the importance of advanced medical technology for successful outcomes in complex transplants.
