Tensions Rise as North Korea Launches Ballistic Missiles Amid Joint Drills
North Korea fired multiple unidentified ballistic missiles off its west coast, coinciding with the start of the US-South Korea annual joint military drills. The drills, criticized by North Korean state media, aim to enhance readiness against threats like North Korea. These exercises, named Freedom Shield, will continue until March 20.
In a fresh escalation of tensions on the Korean peninsula, North Korea launched multiple unidentified ballistic missiles off its west coast on Monday. The timing of this launch coincided with the onset of joint annual military exercises conducted by South Korea in collaboration with the United States.
The projectiles were fired towards the sea at approximately 1:50 p.m. local time, according to a statement from South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). This prompted an increase in surveillance and vigilance by the South Korean military, as confirmed in a text message issued to the press.
North Korean state media has vocally condemned the military exercises, warning that they may exacerbate tensions in the region. The joint drills, under the banner of 'Freedom Shield,' are slated to last until March 20, with the aim of bolstering defense readiness against threats, notably from North Korea, the JCS previously indicated.
