Gujarat Confronts Massive GST Evasion, Over 17,000 Cases Detected

In a startling revelation during the legislative assembly session, Gujarat's state finance minister Kanubhai Desai disclosed that over 17,000 GST evasion cases, totaling Rs 2,043.59 crore, have surfaced in the past two years. This alarming figure highlights the magnitude of tax evasion issues in the state.
Responding to Congress MLA Imran Khedawala's query, Desai detailed that 15 individuals had been arrested under the GST Act, and legal proceedings were initiated against them in court. Furthermore, GST registrations for these offenders were rescinded as part of the enforcement actions.
The minister elaborated on the state's multi-faceted approach to tackle evasion, employing measures such as property and bank account seizures, ITC blocks, and police complaints against defaulters. In response to a query by Congress Legislative Party leader Amit Chavda, Desai identified 525 entities owing significant dues.
