Assam to Undergo Separate Voter List Revision Amid Citizenship Act Provisions

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced that Assam will have a separate voter list revision due to its unique provisions under the Citizenship Act. Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has initiated the second phase of Special Intensive Revision across 12 states and Union Territories starting October 28.

Assam is set to receive a distinct voter list revision, as announced by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Monday. This special order reflects the state's unique position under the Citizenship Act, contrasting with the nationwide directive previously announced in June.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in 12 states and Union Territories, excluding Assam. This phase precedes the expected 2026 Assembly elections. The process includes printing and training stages from October 28 to November 3, leading to the release of draft electoral rolls on December 9.

Emphasizing legal stipulations, CEC Kumar highlighted that the inclusion of Aadhaar in identity verification complies with legal frameworks. However, he clarified that Aadhaar is not a definitive proof of domicile or citizenship, reiterating its role as a credible identity document under the Aadhaar Act.
