The Indian government has taken a significant step to accelerate the exploration of coal and lignite by adding 18 new entities to the list of authorized prospecting agencies. This expansion increases the total number of such agencies to 45, aiming to enhance exploration efficiency and resource development.
Previously, mining operators had to wait for geological reports from one of the 27 existing authorised agencies to operationalise a coal mine. The addition of new entities is expected to cut this waiting time by approximately six months, providing operators with more flexibility in selecting prospecting partners.
The coal ministry indicates this development will tap into private sector resources, promote competitiveness, and foster technological innovation within the exploration ecosystem. By augmenting the rate of exploration activities, the move will contribute to a faster enhancement of mining capabilities, aiding in meeting the country's energy needs more swiftly and effectively.
