Jharkhand's Chief Secretary, Avinash Kumar, conducted an on-site evaluation in Dhanbad following reports of hazardous gas emissions from underground mines operated by Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. This visit, prompted by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, aimed to gauge the severity of the situation affecting local communities.

Accompanied by senior officials, including the acting Director General of Police and BCCL's CMD, Kumar met with affected residents, acknowledging the challenges in managing the naturally occurring gas leaks. The state government, alongside Central authorities, is working on solutions to safeguard public health.

Over the last 12 days, the gas emissions have led to the death of two women and illnesses among over 40 residents. In response, a temporary shelter with basic amenities has been established for those displaced. Efforts include the relocation of affected individuals to BCCL's Belgadia township, with plans for improved living conditions.
