At the Raisina Dialogue 2026, General Anil Chauhan, India's Chief of Defence Staff, underscored the crucial role artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to play in future warfare. He outlined how AI and autonomous systems are already beginning to influence ongoing conflicts, particularly through decision support, targeting, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).

Chauhan stressed that while military power has traditionally been measured by hardware like tanks and aircraft, the nature of warfare is shifting towards a heavy reliance on data, networks, integration, and intelligence. Modern combat requires these elements to address the complexities unfolding across multiple domains, including physical, synthetic, and cognitive realms.

The CDS highlighted the importance of timely decision-making in combat, stating that AI and automated systems enable faster and more effective military strategies. He concluded that future success will hinge not only on conventional platforms but also on deploying integrated AI systems for rapid operational decisions, making AI indispensable in modern warfare.
