German companies operating abroad are facing increasing pessimism regarding their future prospects, as more than a third anticipate worsening economic conditions, according to a Tuesday survey by the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK). This outlook is heavily influenced by the ongoing Iran conflict disrupting global supply chains.
The latest DIHK survey of 4,500 companies found that 32% expect the international economic situation to deteriorate over the next year. This marks an 8-point rise from an earlier survey conducted before the U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran triggered upheaval in the Middle East, affecting energy and supply markets.
Volker Treier, DIHK's head of foreign trade, emphasized that growing uncertainty, particularly from high fuel costs and unstable demand, is the driving concern for businesses. Yet, around 40% of respondents still report good conditions. The survey notes varied economic impacts based on geography, with firms near the conflict zone feeling most vulnerable.
