In a dramatic turn of events during the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, AD Thomas, a young leader from the Congress party, emerged victorious against seasoned Communist Party of India (Marxist) politician PP Chitharanjan in Alappuzha. The election on Wednesday marked a significant shift in a constituency long considered a CPIM bastion.
Thomas, at just 30 years old and hailing from the Kerala Students' Union, claimed victory by a substantial margin of 21,015 votes, garnering 81,065 votes to Chitharanjan's 60,050. BJP candidate MJ Job, formerly with Congress, trailed far behind with 15,373 votes. This victory not only signified an electoral win for Congress but also the rise of a grassroots fighter who transcended personal and financial hardships to enter the assembly.
Thomas's journey from a financially struggling upbringing in Mararikulam, where he worked alongside his father as a fisherman, to his rise in student politics through the Kerala Students' Union, forms a compelling narrative. Despite facing 18 legal cases for protests and political activism and enduring an assault during a protest, Thomas has become a symbol of resistance against the ruling Left government, earning the nickname "Porali" or fighter. His success story resonates with many young and marginalized people across Kerala, highlighting a new era of youthful political leadership.
