In a significant political development, Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The announcement came from Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru, confirming that the Council of Ministers headed by Siddaramaiah has been dissolved with immediate effect. However, Siddaramaiah will continue in his role until new arrangements are established.
According to the official order, the Governor's decision stems from the powers vested in his office by Article 164(1) of the Indian Constitution. The move follows the Chief Minister's resignation, which was prompted by instructions from the Congress party's high command.
Meanwhile, the Congress party is expediting its efforts to form a new government in Karnataka. Party leaders, including Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar, are meeting with Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi to discuss the cabinet reshuffle. Key priorities for the discussions include Rajya Sabha candidacies and the potential appointment of multiple Deputy Chief Ministers to balance social and regional interests.
Among those poised for elevation is Siddaramaiah's son, Yathindra, a Member of the Legislative Council, who is expected to join the new cabinet in a significant role, symbolizing the continuity of Siddaramaiah's political legacy. While D K Shivakumar arrived in Delhi amidst turbulent weather, his potential selection as the next Chief Minister seems imminent.
In an unexpected twist, inclement weather diverted Siddaramaiah's flight to Jaipur, where he met with former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. The Congress Legislative Party is expected to finalize its decisions today, paving the way for an oath-taking ceremony in Karnataka and shifting the state’s political dynamics.
