Darakshan Hassan, an expert on gender studies and human rights advocacy, has raised significant concerns over the recent civilian killings and government crackdowns on demonstrators in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK). Speaking on Friday, she described the escalation of violence as 'very disappointing' and indicative of Pakistan's governance failures.
According to Darakshan, the rise in civilian casualties and internet shutdowns in PoK clearly reflects failures in governmental and security measures. She pointed out the widespread protests as an expression of long-simmering public discontent, criticizing the excessive use of force against civilians.
Hassan further argued that Pakistan has been prioritizing its political ambitions and strategic interests over the needs and rights of the PoK populace. She emphasized that the current unrest signifies deep-rooted dissatisfaction caused by unmet political and economic needs. Hassan also called for intervention by the United Nations Human Rights Council and other international human rights bodies to address the violations in the region.
