Happy birthday, Julieta Lanteri!

The Google Doodle today honors Julieta Lanteri on her 150th birthday. Lanteri, an Italian-Argentine doctor, played a significant role in advocating for women's rights and enhancing healthcare. She was the first woman to vote in Argentina and South America, and her efforts paved the way for women's suffrage in the country.

Born in Italy in 1873, Julieta Lanteri migrated to Argentina with her family when she was six years old. She received her education at the National School of La Plata and later pursued pharmacology at the University of Buenos Aires. She accomplished her medical degree in 1907 and became one of the first five women to achieve the feat in Argentina. She spent the next thirteen years traveling to Europe to work in hospitals and acquire knowledge on healthcare for women and children.

Apart from her medical profession, Julieta Lanteri was a staunch suffragette. In 1910, she played a vital role in organizing the first International Women's Congress. The following year, she became an Argentine citizen and marked her place in history by casting her ballot in the Deliberative Council elections, becoming the first woman to vote in South America. Her achievement led to an amendment in the Electoral Law, which imposed a military service requirement, restricting women from enlisting.

Despite facing numerous challenges, Julieta Lanteri refused to back down. She established her political party, the National Feminist Union, and ran for the position of National Deputy from 1919 to 1932. The party's agenda focused on universal suffrage, gender equality, fair working conditions, childcare support, maternity benefits, and more.

Argentina granted women the official right to vote in 1947, which was a significant step toward gender equality. Julieta Lanteri's unwavering determination and contributions undoubtedly played a significant role in making this dream a reality. Her memory continues to inspire people throughout South America.
