West Bengal is facing a sudden surge in dengue cases, with 1,633 new infections reported in the last 20 days across 16 districts, according to a state health department official.
The most affected areas include 15 districts in south Bengal and Malda in north Bengal. Particularly hard-hit are Murshidabad, Bankura, North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Howrah, and Kolkata, with Murshidabad reporting 382 new cases, taking its total to 851.
Factors such as heavy rain leading to waterlogging have created conducive breeding grounds for mosquitoes. As a consequence, the total number of dengue cases in West Bengal has surged from 2,761 in late June to 4,394 by mid-August.
