In a pioneering medical feat, AIIMS Delhi has successfully conducted real-time ultrasound scans on volunteers located at Antarctica's Maitri station using a telerobotic system. These scans, performed remotely, exemplify a breakthrough in offering expert radiological care despite extreme geographic distances.
The project, showcased on AIIMS Research Day 2026, was led by Dr. Chandrashekhara SH and executed with a robotically controlled ultrasound probe, streaming images live to Delhi clinicians. This initiative involved collaboration with IIT Delhi, IHFC, NCPOR, and RGSSH, highlighting the power of interdisciplinary teamwork.
This technology, crucial for addressing healthcare challenges in isolated regions, also finds potential applications beyond hospitals, according to Dr. Vikas Dogra. In environments where medical infrastructure is scant and emergencies frequent, such innovation promises to transform healthcare delivery.
