In a groundbreaking medical procedure, doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital have successfully removed a denture that was perilously lodged in a man's esophagus. The medical team employed an advanced endoscopic technique utilizing a laser cutter, allowing the patient to avoid what would have been a major surgical intervention.
The patient arrived at the hospital exhibiting severe respiratory distress, significant chest discomfort, and notable difficulty in swallowing. Detailed imaging revealed the dental prosthesis to be securely wedged at a sensitive juncture of the food pipe, presenting risks due to its sharp metallic components.
Anil Arora, Chairman of the Institute of Liver, Gastroenterology, and Pancreaticobiliary Sciences, remarked on the uniqueness of this case, noting the high risk of injury conventional methods posed. Instead, the team used precise laser technology to break the denture into smaller fragments safely. This innovative approach, combined with protective measures like the insertion of an overtube, allowed for the safe removal of the fragments. Dr. Shrihari Anikhindi highlighted the reduced morbidity as a key benefit of this laser-assisted technique, and confirmed that the patient has since made a robust recovery.
