Efforts to contain the virus have been severely undermined by logistical issues at the local level, deep-set mistrust from communities traumatized by previous outbreaks, and global financial constraints exacerbated by the U.S. withdrawal from the WHO. Currently, only 7% of identified contacts have been traced and monitored, leaving many at risk.

Adding to the complexity are attacks on health facilities in eastern Congo, hampering the ability to track and manage potential cases. Experts argue that a fully resourced and prompt response is essential to avert a catastrophe that could surpass previous outbreaks in West Africa.
