By Vishu Adhana: Political developments in member countries have no impact on BIMSTEC's functioning, said the group's Secretary-General Indra Mani Pandey on Tuesday. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Pandey emphasized that BIMSTEC's focus remains on technical and economic cooperation, steering clear of political issues.
His remarks come amid political turmoil in Bangladesh, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country amid widespread protests and violence. Despite this, BIMSTEC's operations continue unaffected, said Pandey. BIMSTEC comprises seven nations: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, with its headquarters in Dhaka.
Pandey further noted that all member countries actively participate in BIMSTEC meetings. He cited recent meetings in Delhi and Myanmar as evidence of ongoing cooperation. Meanwhile, the political crisis in Bangladesh has seen protesters incite violence, leading to multiple deaths and injuries. Sheikh Hasina's resignation has added fuel to the already volatile situation.
