External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar informed the Lok Sabha that 91 Indian nationals were recruited into the Russian Army under false promises, with 14 discharged and 69 awaiting release. The government is treating the situation seriously.

Responding to Congress MP Adoor Prakash's query, Jaishankar disclosed that eight Indians have died, 14 have been assisted back, and 69 are still enlisted in the Russian Army. He emphasized that these individuals were misled about job opportunities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jaishankar personally addressed the issue with Russian leadership, securing an assurance from President Putin for the early discharge of Indian nationals. The CBI has registered a criminal case against 19 suspects, evidencing a human trafficking network targeting Indians. Efforts continue for the return of 69 individuals still in Russia.
