U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, currently in Tel Aviv, is intensifying efforts for an Israel-Hamas ceasefire. Blinken met with Israeli President Issac Herzog on Monday. According to the Times of Israel, Herzog blamed Hamas for the stalled hostage negotiations, emphasizing, 'people have to understand it starts with a refusal of Hamas to move forward.'
Herzog expressed gratitude to U.S. President Joe Biden for projecting power in the region amid Iranian threats. He also thanked mediators like the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, expressing hope for progress in negotiations. 'There is no greater humanitarian objective than bringing our hostages home as they should have returned long ago,' Herzog stated, as cited by the Times of Israel.
Blinken underscored the gravity of the situation, declaring, 'This is a decisive moment—probably the best, maybe the last, opportunity to get the hostages home, achieve a ceasefire, and move towards enduring peace and security.' Diplomats, speaking anonymously to the Washington Post, highlighted sticking points, including Israel's military role in the Philadelphi Corridor and checkpoint establishments for returning Palestinians, as well as the release of Palestinian detainees.
State Department spokesman Vedant Patel noted that Blinken would exert intense pressure to finalize a deal that would cease hostilities, secure hostage release, ensure humanitarian aid distribution, and lay the groundwork for regional stability. This marks Blinken's ninth visit to Tel Aviv since the conflict's onset.
In parallel, mid-level Israeli negotiators held talks in Cairo following discussions in Qatar, generating optimism among mediators. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the same day Blinken arrived in Israel, an Israeli airstrike in central Gaza killed seven members of the same family, according to reports from ANI.
