In the Diamer District of Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan, protests have escalated as local residents express dissatisfaction with the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) over unfulfilled promises tied to the Diamer-Bhasha Dam. Frustrations are high due to inadequate compensation, lack of resettlement options, and insufficient livelihood support.
Local leader Bashir Ahmed Qureshi highlighted the breach of agreements by WAPDA, emphasizing the unified calls for justice from the people of Diamer. The commitments made in 2010 and again in 2021 remain unfulfilled, particularly concerning the distribution of agricultural land to affected families, leading to growing unrest.
Despite the mounting anger, the protests along the Karakoram Highway have remained peaceful, showcasing the demonstrators' responsibility. However, the continued marginalization in political and economic spheres deepens their grievances, as they demand accountability and fair compensation.
