PM Modi Strengthens India-Mauritius Bond on Historic Visit

In a profound gesture of camaraderie, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Indian diaspora in Mauritius on Tuesday, reflecting warmly on his visit to the nation a decade ago, coinciding with the vibrant festival of Holi. With Holi just around the corner, Modi expressed his intent to return to India imbued with the festival's colours.

While speaking to the diaspora, Modi reminisced, "I came to Mauritius 10 years ago, just a week post-Holi, and now, I shall take these vibrant colours back to India." He underlined the depth of the Indo-Mauritian relationship, asserting that Mauritius is not just a partner, but akin to family—a sentiment rooted in shared history and cultural heritage. Highlighting Mauritius as a pivotal connector to the Global South, Modi reiterated India's SAGAR vision initiated in 2015.

During the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Modi noted that India was swift to offer support with vaccines and essentials. He also elaborated on the decision to extend OCI card eligibility to the seventh generation of Mauritian Indians, a gesture further cementing their bond. Modi expressed gratitude towards Mauritius for honouring him with the highest civilian award, reflecting the deepening sweetness in bilateral ties.
