The recent reduction in US federal funding for Radio Free Asia (RFA) and Voice of America (VOA) has raised significant fears among Tibetans relying on these sources for independent news in their native language. The March 15 cut in Congressionally-authorized grants has resulted in staff furloughs at RFA, leaving Tibetans anxious about the continued availability of these vital news outlets.

Despite financial challenges, RFA has managed to maintain its broadcasting into Tibet, with a source in Lhasa expressing relief that news is still accessible. Chinese state media, however, view the development as a victory, with Beijing Daily proclaiming the 'collapse' of America's 'beacon of freedom' while contending that US influence is waning.

Many Tibetans, such as those in the Tibet Autonomous Region, hope that the US government will reassess its funding decision. Former political prisoner Golog Jigme Gyatso highlighted the indispensable role of these outlets, asserting their importance to tens of thousands in the region eager for uncensored news. Despite Chinese efforts to jam broadcasts, Tibetan communities remain determined to access RFA and VOA.
