Senior Israeli military official Lt Gen Eyal Zamir has raised alarms over potential expanded military operations in Gaza, expressing fears for hostages in Hamas custody. According to The Times of Israel, Zamir warned cabinet members about the increased risk to hostages amid dire reports of their treatment.
With around fifty hostages held, and an estimated twenty alive, Zamir's warnings come as a contentious debate brews among Israeli leaders. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich slammed Zamir's caution, insisting both defeating Hamas and recovering hostages are achievable. Smotrich rebuffed ceasefire proposals, urging continued offensive actions against Hamas.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum expressed concerns about the hostages' critical conditions, warning Israeli leaders of escalating risks from continued conflict. The lack of consensus persists among ministers, with options ranging from total military control to negotiating ceasefires, under scrutiny. Prime Minister Netanyahu faces mounting diplomatic pressure and is set for talks in Washington to address the crisis.
