In a recent hearing, Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court raised alarms over the city's escalating pollution crisis, citing excessive construction as a major contributor. According to a report from Dawn, Justice Karim underscored the need for robust institutional measures to combat environmental degradation.
Justice Karim criticized the ineffectiveness of the anti-smog gun under current conditions and emphasized the crucial role of the environment department. He further pointed out the significant impact of smoke-emitting vehicles, particularly those traveling from Karachi along GT Road, on Lahore's Air Quality Index.
To address these issues, the judge ordered the deployment of environmental squads on major roads and demanded reports on gaps in implementing commercial activity time limits. He also called for accountability from the Water and Sanitation Authority over delayed water meter installations and sought updates on the preservation of green spaces like Miyawaki forests.
