In a significant escalation of ongoing regional conflicts, airstrikes targeted the Iranian capital Tehran early Saturday, as reported by state media. A video circulating on social media, confirmed by CNN's geolocation analysis, showed large plumes of smoke and flames enveloping Mehrabad Airport, one of Tehran's main aviation hubs.
Iranian state broadcaster reported additional explosions in both eastern and western Tehran, occurring after the Israeli military's announcement of targeted attacks on Tehran's regime infrastructure. CNN's ground teams observed a simultaneous retaliatory strike initiated by Iran against Tel Aviv, with Fars News documenting Israeli air defences intercepting the incoming fire.
The exchanges follow a week of intense military operations that have amplified risks for civilians across the Middle East. Concurrently, Saudi Arabian defences intercepted a fresh wave of drone attacks targeting Shaybah oil field, as reported by Arab News. Spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Maliki confirmed the neutralisation of multiple aerial threats aimed at vital energy facilities.
Further threats included attempted missile strikes at Prince Sultan Air Base and other strategic locations, highlighting escalating aggression. Despite international condemnations, the GCC asserted member states' right to self-defence. Saudi Arabia, underscoring its commitment to territorial security, announced it would undertake all necessary measures to protect its nation amid these hostilities.
