Government Employees Ramp Up Protests Over Economic Strain in Punjab

The All Government Employees Grand Alliance (AGEGA) in Punjab, Pakistan, is protesting against unmet financial demands and anti-employee policies. Hundreds of government employees, represented by the All Government Employees Grand Alliance (AGEGA), took to the streets outside the Civil Secretariat in Punjab, Pakistan, amplifying demands for financial relief from the provincial government, reports Dawn. Holding placards and chanting slogans, the workers highlighted how soaring inflation and alleged anti-employee policies have left them grappling with economic pressures.

The protestors insisted on the reinstatement of financial benefits, including leave encashment, pension, and gratuity, alongside a 30% disparity allowance and a 50% hike in salaries to counter surging living costs. Rally leaders, such as Khalid Sanghera and Prof Faiza Rana, accused the government of unwarranted withdrawal of employee benefits and delayed execution of promised initiatives.

Participants also criticized structural reforms like outsourcing hospitals and schools, arguing that such actions undermine public services and endanger workers' job security. Rising petroleum costs were underscored as a major factor inflating the overall cost of living. AGEGA leaders warned of heightened protests if their core demands remain unresolved by April 20, urging the government for quick policy action.
