US Blocks IMO's Global Carbon Tax; Pushes for Alternative Proposals

The United States has withdrawn its support for the International Maritime Organisation's global carbon tax proposal, opting for alternative solutions. Led by President Trump's 'America First' agenda, the US formed a coalition that successfully stalled the Net-Zero Framework, resulting in a shift towards more pragmatic shipping emissions policies.

The United States has taken a decisive step against the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) proposed global carbon tax framework. During the 84th session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 84), Washington led a coalition to promote alternative strategies, effectively blocking the advancement of the Net-Zero Framework (NZF).

According to the US Department of State, the opposition aligns with President Donald Trump's 'America First' foreign policy, criticizing the framework as 'fundamentally flawed' and potentially detrimental to American consumers, shipping companies, and the energy sector. The coalition, including Saudi Arabia, Liberia, Panama, and Argentina, successfully urged the IMO to explore other options.

A working group has now been established to evaluate alternative proposals, indicating a shift from the original NZF. This development poses a significant challenge to the IMO's climate initiative, which aimed to implement global shipping decarbonization through emissions-focused regulations.
