China Accuses Two Citizens of UK Espionage

Beijing has accused two Chinese citizens, Wang and Zhou, of spying for the UK. Beijing has leveled serious allegations against two of its citizens, accusing them of acting as spies for Britain. This marks the latest strain in an already tense Sino-British relationship.

According to China's Ministry of State Security, the primary intelligence agency, a major espionage case has been uncovered. The accusation targets a couple, identified only by their surnames Wang and Zhou, who were allegedly recruited by MI6, Britain's foreign intelligence service. Wang had initially gone to Britain as a student in 2015, later joined by his wife. The ministry claims they were provided with hotel accommodations, travel, and financial incentives from the British side. The couple, who also held positions in a 'central state agency,' are accused of passing on government secrets to MI6.

The case is still under investigation, with no specific details released about what information was compromised or the current location of Wang and Zhou.

In a related statement, Dave Pares, spokesman for UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, maintained it was Britain's ''longstanding policy not to comment on the work of our intelligence agencies.'' These accusations come on the heels of recent charges against individuals in the UK for allegedly spying for Chinese authorities, adding more tension to the diplomatic relationship between the two countries. Notably, Britain has also taken a firm stance on China's actions in Hong Kong, a former British colony, criticizing Beijing for undermining freedoms it had pledged to uphold.
