With Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri elected to the Lok Sabha, the BJP is now tasked with choosing a successor from its seven other MLAs in the House.
Bidhuri's victory in South Delhi's Lok Sabha elections necessitates his assembly seat's vacation, reducing BJP's strength to seven in the 70-member House. Senior party sources indicated that names such as Mohan Singh Bisht, Ajay Mahawar, and Vijender Gupta are being considered.
Mahawar, representing Ghonda in northeast Delhi and also convener of the party's poll management committee, alongside being the BJP's chief whip, is a strong contender. Bisht, a seasoned five-time legislator from Karwal Nagar, has his experience bolstering his claim. Former Leader of Opposition and Rohini MLA Gupta is also in the running.
Other BJP assembly members include OP Sharma, Abhay Verma, Anil Bajpayi, and Jitendra Mahajan. The newly appointed Leader of Opposition will serve a tenure of approximately six to seven months, with Delhi's assembly polls scheduled for early next year. The ruling party AAP holds a majority with 62 MLAs.
