North Korea has reignited tensions by resuming its provocative balloon campaigns towards South Korea. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that around 350 trash-filled balloons were floated across the border, with approximately 100 landing in South Korean territory primarily in the Seoul area.
This is North Korea’s sixth launch of such balloons since late May, with the latest batch carrying rubbish like papers, similar to previous balloons that included manure, cigarette butts, and waste batteries. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has described these activities as “a despicable and irrational provocation,” stating that South Korea will maintain firm military readiness to counter any provocations.
In response, South Korea has prepared to resume anti-Pyongyang frontline propaganda broadcasts, last used in 2017. These psychological warfare tactics, dating back to the Cold War, have been a flashpoint between the Koreas. The United States and its allies remain vigilant, especially after the recent pact between North Korea and Russia, signaling deeper military cooperation and potential threats to regional stability.
