A federal judge in Florida has dismissed the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump. The decision came after defense lawyers argued that special counsel Jack Smith was illegally appointed.
US District Judge Aileen Cannon’s ruling brings a surprising end to what was seen as a significant legal threat to Trump. The charges accused Trump of hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate and obstructing FBI efforts to recover them.
The defense challenged the legality of Smith's appointment under the Constitution's Appointments Clause. Judge Cannon agreed in a detailed 93-page ruling, stating, “The Framers gave Congress a pivotal role in the appointment of principal and inferior officers. That role cannot be usurped by the Executive Branch.” Smith's team did not immediately comment.
