Protest Erupts Over Couple’s Elopement in Jaisalmer

A protest led by former MLA Sang Singh Bhati escalated into violence in Jaisalmer as demonstrators expressed their discontent over a couple's elopement and marriage against the wishes of the woman's family, officials reported on Friday.

To control the situation, police resorted to lathicharge and detained four individuals involved in the protest, authorities said. The woman's family, opposed to the couple's relationship, had filed a missing persons report at the Kotwali police station after the couple got married on July 9.

"Four people have been detained who were part of the protest. Others involved are being identified. The couple is not minor," stated DSP Rajesh Sharma.
