CJI Advocates for Judicial Efficiency and Trust in Lower Courts

Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud on Sunday said trial judges often avoid granting bail in significant crime cases due to suspicion and a preference for playing it safe.

Addressing the 11th Annual Conference of the Berkeley Centre on Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination, the CJI called for a 'sense of robust common sense' in examining each case. He highlighted the adverse impact of delays in granting bail, which often necessitates appeals to higher courts and burdens the Supreme Court with cases that should have been resolved at the trial level.

Justice Chandrachud also stressed the need to build trust in the lower judiciary, enabling them to make fair decisions without fear of career repercussions and criticized the trend of viewing relief grants with suspicion. Encouraging competence at all levels, he pushed for a more efficient and just legal system in India.
