In a tragic incident highlighting escalating religious intolerance, Dr Zakaur Rehman, an Ahmadi doctor, was shot dead at his clinic in Punjab, Pakistan, on Sunday. Police reported that unidentified gunmen, believed to be motivated by religious hatred, targeted Dr Rehman at his dental clinic in Lala Musa, Gujrat.
According to the victim's family, Dr Rehman had no personal enmity with anyone, suggesting that his fatal shooting was faith-driven. He leaves behind a wife, a son, and three daughters. The Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya Pakistan confirmed his role as an office-bearer in their Gujrat chapter. Amir Mahmood, a spokesperson for the group, condemned the murder and highlighted a growing trend of violence against Ahmadis in the region.
Mahmood also criticized the recent Supreme Court decision granting bail to an Ahmadi accused, which he believes has fueled the hate campaign. He called for the perpetrators of these hate campaigns to be brought to justice, emphasizing the need to end the discrimination against the Ahmadiyya community. Despite their constitutional and legal challenges, minorities in Pakistan, including Ahmadis, continue to face widespread harassment.
