A press release from the investigative agency disclosed that Rao eluded arrest by constantly changing his identity and location.
Initially, Rao was accused in 2002 of cheating SBI Chandulal Biradari Branch, Hyderabad, out of Rs. 50 lakh through fabricated documents. Despite multiple chargesheets and a declaration of death by a civil court, the CBI relentlessly pursued him, leading to his arrest in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu.
