Kolkata police on Saturday apprehended the suspect involved in the brutal sexual assault and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at a state-run hospital. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee vowed to seek the death penalty for the perpetrator.
The accused, reportedly an outsider frequenting the hospital premises, was arrested and remanded to 14-day police custody. The man faces charges under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of BNS.
Chief Minister Banerjee and other officials emphasized the seriousness of the crime, assuring that the investigation would be swift and transparent. Hospitals across the state witnessed protests by junior doctors demanding safety improvements and justice for their colleague.
