The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Monday named Jamaican Finance Minister Nigel Clarke to a prominent role, after his noteworthy contributions to fiscal reforms in the Caribbean nation. Clarke, nominated by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, will succeed Antoinette Sayeh as one of the IMF's three deputy managing directors, effective at the end of October.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva praised Clarke, stating, "He is an exceptional public servant and policymaker," and credited him with strengthening Jamaica's economy. Clarke has been instrumental in negotiating IMF credit lines, starting his stint in 2016 as ambassador of economic affairs and later becoming the finance minister in 2018.

Under Clarke's leadership, Jamaica's central bank achieved autonomy, and an independent fiscal commission was established. Clarke's strategic policies during the COVID-19 pandemic facilitated rapid economic recovery. Notably, Moody's Ratings upgraded Jamaica's government rating to B1, with a 'positive' outlook last year.

In a significant milestone, Jamaica was removed from the Financial Action Task Force's 'gray list' in June, marking another key achievement during Clarke's tenure. Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced he has prepared a shortlist of candidates to succeed Clarke as finance minister and parliamentarian.
