On Sunday, one of Libya's most wanted human traffickers, Abdel-Rahman Milad, was killed in the capital, Tripoli, according to Libyan officials, escalating tensions in the western region of the country.
Milad, who led a coast guard unit in Zawiya and faced United Nations sanctions, was shot dead by unknown assailants in his vehicle in the Sayyad area. No group has claimed responsibility for the killing.
The incident highlights the ongoing turmoil and instability in Libya since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted Moammar Gadhafi. Libya remains divided between factions backed by rival armed groups and foreign governments, complicating efforts to restore order.
