A Congress delegation, headed by city unit chief Devender Yadav, approached Lt Governor VK Saxena on Monday, accusing Shelly Oberoi of continuing as Delhi mayor illegally beyond her term, which ended in April.
Yadav emphasized it is now the turn for a Scheduled Caste (SC) member to assume the mayoral position according to Section 35 of the MCD Act. However, elections for the post have not been held, depriving an SC candidate of their rightful turn.
He warned that any decisions made by Oberoi post March 31, 2024, would be illegal and could be contested in court. The lieutenant governor assured the delegation that appropriate action would be taken regarding the mayoral appointment.
