Arrest Made in Senior Citizen Train Assault Case

A man was arrested for assaulting a senior citizen on a train over beef possession suspicion. Suresh Jadhav, 19, was remanded in police custody. The victim, Ashraf Ali Sayyed Hussain, 72, was attacked by a group on the Dhule-Mumbai CSMT Express. Police are still searching for three other suspects whose bail was cancelled.

A man was arrested in the district on Wednesday in connection with the assault of a senior citizen on a train on suspicion of carrying beef, police said, even as three other accused whose bail was cancelled remained at large.

Suresh Jadhav, 19, was produced before a magistrate and remanded in police custody until September 6, according to senior inspector Archana Dusane of the Government Railway Police (GRP). Jadhav was apprehended in Thane district, she added.

Ashraf Ali Sayyed Hussain, 72, a native of Jalgaon district in north Maharashtra, was assaulted by a group on board the Dhule-Mumbai CSMT Express on August 28 over suspicions that he was carrying beef.

A video of the incident went viral on social media, leading to the arrest of Akash Awhad, 30, Nitesh Ahire, 30, and Jayesh Mohite, 21, on August 31. They were granted bail the following day but had their bail recently cancelled. The trio was en route to Mumbai for a police recruitment drive when the incident occurred.

The GRP later added charges of dacoity and hurting religious sentiments to the case and applied for the bail cancellation of the suspects. The court complied, and police are now attempting to trace the trio.
