In a strategic move to combat overtourism, Greece has announced a 20-euro levy on cruise ship visitors to the islands of Santorini and Mykonos during the peak summer season.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis revealed the plan on Sunday, underscoring the need to preserve the islands' unique charm amid increasing tourist numbers.
The funds generated will be directed towards improving local infrastructure, while additional regulations will be introduced to manage the flow of cruise ships and address other critical issues like water shortages.
