US and Israel Seek Unified Response Amid Middle East Turmoil
The Biden administration aims to coordinate with Israel on responding to Iran's recent attack, as the Middle East faces potential regional war. U.S. Deputy Secretary Kurt Campbell stressed the region's instability and the risks to Israeli and U.S. interests if conflict escalates. Ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah further complicate the situation.
The Biden administration is striving to align its position with Israel in response to Iran's recent attack, while acknowledging the heightened risk of regional warfare in the Middle East, according to U.S. Deputy Secretary Kurt Campbell.
In a virtual event hosted by the Carnegie Endowment, Campbell condemned Iran's actions as "deeply irresponsible" and emphasized the necessity of a retaliatory measure. However, he noted the region's precarious state, highlighting concerns over a potential broader escalation that could threaten both Israeli and U.S. interests.
The Middle East's fragile state was further highlighted by Iran launching over 180 missiles into Israel on Tuesday, marking its largest assault on the nation. This has led both Jerusalem and Washington to pledge a strong response. Israeli forces are concurrently engaged with Hezbollah along the northern border, with eight Israeli soldiers recently killed in the deadliest clash on that front in the past year.
