Arvind Kejriwal, the former chief minister of Delhi and AAP national convener, is embroiled in legal proceedings after the Supreme Court dismissed his plea to quash summons in a defamation case concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi's educational qualifications.
The case began when the Gujarat Metropolitan court summoned Kejriwal and AAP's Sanjay Singh for their alleged 'sarcastic' remarks about Modi's degrees. Following a Gujarat High Court decision overturning a CIC order to release the degree information, Gujarat University Registrar Piyush Patel filed the defamation suit.
The Supreme Court, while noting the dismissal of a similar petition by Sanjay Singh, chose not to entertain Kejriwal's plea. However, it stated that the trial would decide the matter's merits, leaving open all contentions. Kejriwal's counsel argued that the statements were not defamatory and that Patel was not the aggrieved party.
