Russia's Drone Strikes Escalate Tensions in Odesa: Impact on Port Infrastructure
For the second consecutive day, Russian drone strikes have targeted port infrastructure in Ukraine's Odesa region, causing significant damage. Despite no reported injuries, the assault impacted both active and inactive sites. The Ukrainian air force managed to intercept the majority of the drones launched overnight, while regional fallout affected neighboring Moldova and Romania.
In a concerning escalation of hostilities, Russian drone attacks damaged critical port infrastructure in Ukraine's Odesa region for the second day running, according to Governor Oleh Kiper. On Friday, he confirmed significant damage, although no injuries were reported amid the strikes on Odesa district.
The Ukrainian military reported that Russia launched an unprecedented 133 drones overnight, of which 73 were shot down by the air force while electronic countermeasures thwarted 58 others. The fate of the remaining drones remains unclear, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy claimed the Chornobyl nuclear plant's radiation shelter was damaged.
Thursday's assault also impacted the Izmail district's port facilities, crucial for Ukraine's Black Sea export operations. Neighboring Moldova and NATO-member Romania were also affected, with drones reportedly exploding on Moldovan soil and remnants found in Romania. The ongoing conflict continues to pressure Ukraine's key export routes amid the war initiated by Russia in February 2022.
