Poland Convicts Ukrainian for Russian Sabotage Plot

A court in Poland has delivered an eight-year prison sentence to a Ukrainian man accused of planning sabotage and arson activities on behalf of Russia. The ruling was issued in Wroclaw, where the 51-year-old, identified as Serhyi S, was found guilty of joining a criminal organization and preparing to set fires at various locations in the city.

Polish state security officials apprehended Serhyi S in January 2024, charging him with acting under orders from Russia. Alleged plans included targeting a US-owned paint factory and other structures. While Serhyi S accepted receiving online instructions to commit arson for payment, he has denied the charges.

In connection with the case, four additional individuals face charges, and more than a dozen others from Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus have been arrested on related sabotage or espionage allegations. The Polish government claims these events are part of Russia's hybrid warfare strategy against Western nations supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
