Crackdown on Social Media Rumours at Mahakumbh

Authorities in Mahakumbh Nagar have filed a case against 34 social media accounts for spreading false rumours about a train fire video. The footage, inaccurately depicting an accident in Prayagraj, was actually from Bangladesh in 2022. Since Mahakumbh's start, 171 accounts face similar charges.

In a recent development, Mahakumbh Nagar police have taken legal action against 34 social media accounts for allegedly disseminating a misleading video about a train fire incident. The video was incorrectly claimed to be linked to a tragedy in Prayagraj, though investigations revealed its origin to be a 2022 incident in Bangladesh.

The footage mistakenly depicted 300 fatalities on a train headed to Mahakumbh, but it was actually from a fire involving the Parbat Express on the Dhaka-Sylhet line. Law enforcement authorities have registered a case under relevant sections against the accounts responsible for spreading this false information.

Since the Mahakumbh Mela commenced, law enforcement has registered a total of 12 cases against 171 social media profiles accused of propagating deceptive content related to the festival, further amplifying the need for vigilance in digital information sharing.
