State Crackdown on Sanctuary Cities: A Nationwide Effort Intensifies

In a sweeping nationwide initiative, Republican lawmakers are intensifying efforts to bolster President Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration. According to an Associated Press analysis, legislation targeting sanctuary city policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities has been introduced in more than 20 states this year.

These proposals aim to provide enforcement “teeth” to those aggrieved by local governments not adhering to state immigration laws. Spearheaded by Georgia state Sen. Blake Tillery, his bill would permit lawsuits against officials promoting sanctuary policies. However, opponents argue this could lead to extended detentions by local police, fearful of lawsuits.

This legislative push coincides with the Trump administration's legal actions against non-complying governments. Various states are imposing severe penalties on local officials, including fines and prison sentences, for violating anti-sanctuary policies, sparking legal and constitutional debates regarding federal and state authority.
