The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has called on a petitioner to furnish solid evidence to back claims of widespread open defecation during the Mahakumbh event in Prayagraj. The claims cited dysfunctional or insufficient bio-toilets as the root cause of the issue.
During the hearing, NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava noted that the evidence provided was insufficient. Only two video clips were supplied, lacking geo-coordinates and not submitted to the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB). The Tribunal described the issue as urgent and pressing.
The Tribunal instructed the petitioner to submit all relevant materials to the UPPCB. If claims are substantiated, immediate remedial action should follow, with a report filed within four weeks. The situation could be revisited by the bench if deemed necessary.
