The Supreme Court has raised questions regarding the Delhi government's stance on not releasing Sukhdev Yadav, who is serving a 20-year jail term for the murder of Nitish Katara. This development comes after claims by the government that Yadav, despite completing his sentence, should remain behind bars.
A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan has directed the Delhi government's home department secretary to submit an affidavit, affirming under oath that Yadav will not be released post completion of his sentence. The court is expected to review submissions by March 3.
The 2015 verdict by the high court sentenced Yadav to life imprisonment, implying a 20-year term without remission. The Supreme Court previously awarded a 25-year sentence to others involved in the case, citing the murder was due to a disapproved relationship across caste lines.
